Did you hear about the collapse of XL, the UKs 3rd biggest airline? Have a read about it here if not. The basic gist is that they have gone under, leaving 1000s of customers out of pocket or worse still stranded in foreign countries.

It seems my parents had a very lucky escape, on Tuesday last week they almost booked a holiday with them.

They had planned to go away today, as my mum has 2 weeks off work and they have been searching like mad for a holiday for weeks, they are very picky and…cheap…to put it bluntly, they usually wait until the last minute and get a bargain deal, but this time they just couldn’t find any thing, prices weren’t dropping at all. They eventually found a holiday, flying with XL, but it was more money than they usually pay — they debated about it for a few days, changing their minds several times before finally on Thursday they decided it was too much money and that they would just go somewhere in the UK this time instead.

On Friday morning the news of XLs decline was all over the paper and news. They paid on my mums switch card so the money would have been lost. Talk about a lucky escape hey?

The moral of the story? Well, there are two; Always use your credit card online as you are covered in cases like this, and sometimes it pays to be cheap hehe
